Mercedes SLS AMG
The SLS AMG is a grand tourer that was designed and developed by the AMG/Mercedes partnership, as a replacement for the SLR McLaren. This is the first Mercedes done in-house by AMG, and it is inspired by the legendary 300SL Gullwing. The car was unveiled in 2009, and it went on sale in Europe in the middle of the next year; it made the trip across the Atlantic to the US in 2011. The SLS AMG is noted for being on the cover of the PlayStation 3 version of Gran Turismo 5, and it is the chosen safety car for the 2011 F1 season.
The SLS AMG was the brainchild of Gorden Wagener, who gave it a long hood, a cabin closer to the rear axle and a shortened rear end. The car's doors open in a gullwing fashion, straight upward, as opposed to up and forward like those on the SLR. Doors must be closed manually- engineers decided to omit an auto-close system in order to keep weight down. However, in the event of a collision, the doors can be fully removed.
The Mercedes SLS AMG is available in four different versions. The first one to launch is the gullwing coupe, and in 2009, a special "Desert Gold" edition was released at Dubai's International Auto Show. In the middle of 2010, an FIA-GT3 racer was released, and for 2011 through 2013, Mercedes will also release a roadster that has a soft top and side-opening doors. There will also be an electric "E-Cell" coupe and a Black Series, to be lightened by 660lbs. The GT3 version was unveiled at the New York Auto Show in 2010; it won its first race in October. There was a one-off "Blackbird" SLS AMG, created by Mercedes' Australian division just for that country's International Motor Show; it was sold to a buyer from Singapore.
