Bugatti Veyron

Bugatti Veyron

The Bugatti Veyron is a midengine GT car. Its Super Sport version is the fastest street legal car in production today, with a top speed of just under 268 miles per hour. Designed by the Volkswagen Group and produced by Bugatti at its headquarters in Alsace, France, the Veyron is so successful that it was named Car of the Decade by Top Gear. Once in a while Bugatti even comes out with a complete special Veyron model, like this one in cooperation with Hermes.

The Veyron is powered by a V16 engine; each cylinder has four valves. The engine has a displacement of almost 488 cubic inches, and is fed by four turbochargers. The Veyron's transmission is a direct shift, dual-clutch gearbox, with paddle shifting, and the car can be driven in either fully- or semi-automatic mode.

The top speed of the Bugatti Veyron was verified in November 2006 at Volkswagen's private test track, by Top Gear's James May. He later noted that the engine breathes in 9,900 gallons of air per minute when it is running at top speed. Once he was back at Top Gear studios, he was asked what driving it at top speed felt like; he replied that it felt "totally undramatic" and it was stable at high speeds.

In 2010, Bugatti test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel drove a Super Sport to a speed of 267.85 miles an hour, reclaiming Bugatti's title back from the Ultimate Aero TT. The speed was attained by averaging the car's two test runs, and the record was certified by Guinness and by the German government.
